If your current exercise routine is not getting you the weight loss results you are looking for or you are just tired of the same old routine, it might be time for some fresh workout ideas. Instead of enlisting some of the basic exercises to help you lose weight -- which might bore you to tears -- engage in the top five cutting edge exercises to reshape your body and get healthy.
When you think of exercise for weight loss, you may not think of weight training. However, building lean muscle mass will boost your metabolism. One of the top five cutting edge exercises to lose weight is Supercharged Lifting from Alwyn Cosgrove, author of, "The New Rules for Lifting for Life." Crosgrove advises lifting weight in pairs of multi-joint, functional moves with free weights for resistance. Weights are lifted heavy and fast, with zero rest in between paired moves to target multiple muscle groups at once. Combine circuits such as the squat to overhead press and an inverted row. Complete 12 to 15 reps of each exercise, choosing weights that are 90 percent maximum effort for that amount of reps.
Punch Away Fat
Boxing is not just about knocking out an opponent. Boxers are known for their extreme workouts and intense physical conditioning. Boxing training is no longer just for those that want to step into the ring. Boxing workouts are a total body cardio workout that can help you lose weight, build muscle and relieve stress. Activities such as jumping rope, punching and conditioning drills will give you more defined arms, legs and core. "Shape" magazine notes that boxing workouts can burn 200 calories in 30 minutes by punching a heavy bag and 300 calories sparring, requiring maximum effort and active recovery. Beginners can learn more about boxing fitness through group classes and DVDs.
Jump Rope Renaissance
The jump rope is no longer just a toy for the playground. Jump rope workouts can burn up to 135 calories in only 10 minutes, according to "Fitness" magazine, making it an extremely effective weight loss tool. In addition to it's calorie burning benefits, jumping rope sculpts your legs, chest, arms and shoulders. Jump rope expert Marty Winkler of RopeSport suggests staying on the balls of your feet, jumping only 1 to 2 inches off the ground, keeping the elbows close to the sides to achieve best technique. To torch even more calories per workout, add intervals and variations such as 30 seconds jumping as fast as possible followed by 30 seconds of easy jumping. Add music and jump to your favorite song for the duration of your workout.
Outdoor boot camp classes combine body-weight exercises and functional weights such as tires and logs to burn fat and calories; these intense classes leave you dripping in sweat. Boot camps typically string together cardio exercises such as jogging, jumping jacks, jumping rope, plyometric jumps, with strengthening exercises like pushups, planks, squats, lunges and crunches for a fast moving, full body workout. A high heart rate and diverse nature of these workouts make them calorie torching and cutting edge exercises -- and the camaraderie and team atmosphere of the boot camp classes keep participants pushing hard.
Hip Hop Hooray
Dancers have amazing physiques due to their intense training. Hip hop dance classes are an accessible way to get fit fast, even for the beginner, and can burn 300 to 500 calories per workout. The popular music provides a high intensity beat that will pump up the BPM of any workout, and the class never stops, providing constant cardio. This full body workout will tone your arms, legs and core without all of the repetitions of traditional lifting. Most health clubs, community centers and dance studios offer adult hip hop classes.
